Western Mazda

While you'll already have assumed that the tiny mirrors aren't going to be on the showroom car, the rest of the Mazda Minagi looks fairly ready to go. As you can see, it's a crossover in the Qashqai mould, and will eventually lead to a new CX-5 model.

There's nothing new in the unveiling of a crossover, but the Minagi is a little bit more than that: it begins a brand new chapter in Mazda's history, says company President Takashi Yamanouchi. That chapter is the 'Kodo' chapter, which is the name given to Mazda's new design language, debuted here. We agree it's not a huge departure from what went before, but is does make for a sharp crossover.

Mazda says so, and it calls it 'Skyactiv'. The term refers to all of Mazda's latest engine, gearbox and chassis technology, which is - unsurprisingly - aimed at decreasing consumption while having the opposite effect on, driving pleasure. Essentially it means weight reduction wherever possible, and bringing technology like stop-start, regenerative braking, and hybrid and electric drivetrains. Nothing revolutionary, but useful.
